High School Trip Dates by Grade:
All trips and events are subject to change so please check in with the calendar at https://www.aldocs.org/calendar.html as well as with your student or the front office. Trip outlines and detailed letters coming soon!

9th Grade:
  • Backpacking (September 2-5) Letter Home, Packling List and Permision
    • Route maps:  Meadows,  Little Bear,  West Fork,  Alum Camp,  Sapillo
    • Alternate backpacking in case of uncontrollable events (September 8-11)
  • Sonoran Sojourn (November 17-20)   In our endless quest to understand where we live, we will venture further afield, heading down from the mountains of our beloved Gila & into the low country around Tucson and into the Sulphur Springs Valley.  It’s time to learn about one of the most fascinating -- and, biologically diverse -- bioregions on the planet, the Sonoran Desert Sky Island region, which is composed of geographically-isolated, high-elevation mountains floating in a sea of low-elevation desert.

10th Grade:
  • Backpacking (September 15-18) Letter Home, Packling List and Permision
    • Route maps:  Meadows,  Little Bear,  West Fork,  Alum Camp,  Sapillo
    • Alternate backpacking in case of uncontrollable events (September 22-25)
  • Sophomore Conflict Awareness (February 23–26)  In our life-long quest to understand where we live and who we are as a body politic, we will head down from the mountains of our beloved Gila and into the Rio Grande River valley between Albuquerque and the international border. It’s time to learn about history, art and ecology while focusing upon three engaging and historically relevant themes throughout US History and Government, (i) international human rights, (ii) human identity & migration, and (iii) how our species deals with conflict.

11th Grade:
  • Backpacking (September 15-18) Letter Home, Packling List and Permision
  • Route maps:  Meadows,  Little Bear,  West Fork,  Alum Camp,  Sapillo
      • Alternate backpacking in case of uncontrollable events (September 22-25)
  • Micro to Macro Junior Science Trip (April 13-16)  In our mission here at ALCS, we strive for students to understand just how critical a sense of interconnectivity is. This being the case, we invite students to our annual junior class science trip. The purpose of this trip is for students to be able to experience real world interconnectivity between a myriad of sciences, including Astronomy, Biology, Ecology, Chemistry and Geology. Often students are introduced to these topics as separate functions in science, but this trip is to help demonstrate how each facet of science has contributed to the development of our ever-changing world and how we can protect it through our understanding of it.

12th Grade:
  • Backpacking (September 2-5) Letter Home, Packling List and Permision
    • Route maps:  Meadows,  Little Bear,  West Fork,  Alum Camp,  Sapillo
    • Alternate backpacking in case of uncontrollable events (September 8-11)
  • Marine Biology in Mexico (March 1-6) In our life-long quest to understand the context of where we live and where we come from in time & space, we will be leaving Grant County, the state of New Mexico, and even the United States - crossing the international border into Sonora, Mexico to learn about marine biology, desert ecology, life skills, economics, history, foreign language and culture. We hope that all students in the class will be able to attend this curricular road trip that offers students a glimpse of a wider world beyond our Gila home country, and an integrating context for understanding facts, issues & stories that are often hidden in plain sight. Not to mention an experience of a lifetime!
Senior Events:
  • Senior Retreat December 11th
  • Senior Banquet May TBD
  • Graduation Rehearsal May 22
  • Graduation May 23

-I have purposely presented the land ethic as a product of social evolution because nothing so important as an ethic is ever 'written' …
